I lost my son Ian to SUDEP on 11-9-14. He was a 24 year old seventh grade math teacher. After developing epilepsy at age 11, Ian was seizure free until July, 2014. He had another seizure in September and died in November. It was a tremendous shock to our family, as we had never heard of SUDEP. I also have two daughters and a grandson born three days before Ian passed. I'm not sure how we have made it through the last year. A memorial fund in Ian's name has been created to help his middle school kids with uniform and school supply costs. Another fund has been started to provide a study abroad experience in South Africa through the Department of Education at Michigan State University. Spending a summer in South Africa with study abroad was one of the high points of Ian's life. Helping others in Ian's name helps ease the pain a little, but it still a long, long journey trying to deal with his loss. I have great empathy for others trying to cope with the same situation. I am a reference librarian in Perrysburg, Ohio.
